Step Out of the Box and Check-in: Reframing the Diversity Dialogue, Swee Wong, Co-Founder, Relationomics Inc. and Samia Bahsoun, Kelley Kosow (Moderator), Presentation room III

Gender, Race, Nationality, Age Range... How many times have you been asked to define yourself by "checking a box?"  Putting yourself in any box only limits who you are.  It focuses on your outer characteristics instead of your inner qualities and what sets you apart instead of what unites you with your co-workers.  Simply put, when the emphasis is placed upon our differences, it causes separation.

In this seminar, we invite you to set aside the boxes, check-in with your totality, and create the foundation for a high performance culture, aligned inside and out.  It's time to feel the connection and re-frame the diversity dialogue!  Inclusion starts from within!

Avoiding Employee Retaliation Claims, Jennifer Kay, Partner, Tribler Orpett & Meyer P.C., Presentation room I

Most employers are quite familiar with the basic prohibitions against discrimination and harassment in the workplace but far fewer understand the important role employee retaliation claims now play in the legal landscape.  Retaliation is the "hidden" claim that in many cases triggers jury verdicts even when the underlying allegations are rejected.

Since employer education is the key to avoiding these costly claims, Jennifer Kay will present the fundamentals of retaliation in employment, explaining the origins of retaliation in statutes and judge-made law and providing specific workplace practices employers may adopt to protect themselves from expensive and time-consuming lawsuits.  The recommended practices will also provide an effective tool for the employer's defense, should litigation occur.
